How to: Pick the right belt

Belts - I love 'em. Its a rare day when I don't have one on. If you have a defined waist, like me,  then it's a great way of drawing attention to it (and away from other areas!) and if you don't then one popped around your hips can make your waist look smaller by comparison (or just draw attention away from that area full stop).

But, did you know that the right belt could make you look thinner? Or that the wrong belt may either overwhelm your outfit? It's all about SCALE!

Generally, you want to match the width of your belt to your own scale. Now, how do you know your scale? Well, think about your clothing size, your height, have a look at the size of your frame - do you have large features, or small? Is your shoe size a 7/40 or above? Or maybe you have little feet, and dainty hands and wrists to go with them.

As someone who is nearly 5 foot 7, a size 16, with size 7-8 feet, I am considered as someone who is medium to larger in scale. Therefore, when thinking about belts those that are themselves medium to large in scale tend to suit me better,, whereas those that are smaller may accidentally make me look larger by comparison.

The opposite is true of someone who is petite - a smaller width belt will be in proportion, whereas a wide one may be overwhelming.

Now, I'm not saying that this is an unbreakable rule - you will definitely see me out and about in a skinny belt from time to time, but I always try to balance it out with other larger features to my outfit. Like anything with style, these are just guidelines to help you along your way!
